It’s the most wonderful time of year for family portraits, and if there’s one thing I can recommend, it’s booking your photo shoot date in advance to make sure you get the best day and the best light! September is very busy with bookings, so contacting me in early Summer will ensure you get your preferred date in the fall.
In my 20+ years of taking portraits, I have found that September 30th is the best day of the year for colours in the trees and that golden sunlight at dawn and dusk. Winnipeg’s fall season is so short, so I would recommend booking your photo shoot near that date to maximize on the beauty of the season.
This family had their photos done on September 30th between 9am and 10am, and the results were gorgeous. They chose Assiniboine Forest as their location and knowing how busy this place gets with other photographers on fall evenings, going in the morning was a smart choice! The forest was quieter, and we almost had the entire place to ourselves.
If you’re looking to update your family photos, remember that late September and early October are ideal, and scheduling the photos in the second hour after sunrise or before sunset will get you that gorgeous light on a sunny day.
If you have any questions, just contact me and I can send you location ideas, date & time recommendations as well as tips for what to wear for your session!
What joy it was to meet this adorable family and to take their photos! They were in Winnipeg celebrating their wedding anniversary and as part of their day, they decided to include a family photo session to mark the occasion. These kids were so so sweet, so full of smiles, energy and willingness to be in all these photos, I loved it! The kids don’t understand English, yet that wasn’t even a barrier – we communicated through smiles & fun and connected through the experience of them being photographed! Here’s a preview from our time at CMU and then at Assiniboine Forest: rich
I have to admit, taking photos outside in the cold in a time as unforgiving as our winter in Winnipeg is never anything easy, but I do LOVE my winter photo sessions. There’s something about going out there in the cold, the white, and the quiet of the season. Yes, extra energy and attention is needed, but the results are always so magical. Even on a dark, foggy and gloomy day like the one we had for Ashley and Kyle’s engagement session. We started with a few fun shots at the Forks, but then did most of our photos at Assiniboine Forest. The birch trees seem to stretch on forever and the beauty of the forest is nothing like it.
And these two. Where do I start. They are absolutely lovely to photograph – their love is such a treasure and seeing them together was so heartwarming. Their decision to choose forever together is clear to see that it’s a good one, and it was such an honour to capture it. Here’s a handful of the many images we captured while out in the beautiful wintery landscape that we are lucky to find in our great city!
